January's Competition Monthly

A new year, a new start. Francesca hopes you'll find something familiar, or even better, something outside your comfort zone in this latest selection of competitions.

When I first attended Adult Education creative writing classes I'd written several short stories and poems, but not a lot else. Our tutor (author Elaine Everest), encouraged us to try our hand at all sorts of different writing. We had a go at scripts, several forms of poetry, articles, flash fiction, tips and fillers, leaflets, non-fiction books, novels and a few more things besides.

One of the most valuable aspects of these classes was that we were also encouraged to submit to all sorts of markets. Between us, we've ended up with a whole heap of different genres and types of writing published in different arenas. This success is largely due to us being pushed to write and submit outside of our comfort zone. Today, now running her own classes, Elaine still encourages us to try new things, giving us challenges that we might not normally tackle.

It's a new year, so why not try a competition outside of your comfort zone? Or dig out work you've abandoned in order to write something else. The selection this month includes short stories, novels for adults and children, script writing, poetry, flash fiction and two humour competitions. Perhaps you fancy yourself as a Ben Elton or Carla Lane? Perhaps the new Mike Leigh? Have a go and see what new doors you can open.

Good luck to you all, and don't forget to let us know of any successes you have.

December's Competition Monthly!

Francesca takes a look at how to stand out from the crowd in a themed contest and has a diverse batch of competitions to enter this month.

Depending on what competition you've entered, you could be pitted against thirty other people, or thousands. If the competition has a theme, this makes coming up with an original idea, one that the judges aren't going to groan at because they've already read fifty other entries with the same idea, quite difficult. Ideas are all around us, and if you're like me, you're forever jotting them down and storing them for future pieces of work. But when having to think of something for a specific subject, the mind can often go blank.

When faced with an empty page, I like to mind map with a spider diagram. I'm sure some of you will already do this. For other, newer writers, hopefully this will help the creative juices flow. The first ideas I have will be obvious, but as the tendrils of the diagram get longer, more obscure thoughts come to the surface, ones that may seem outside the box, but have a better chance of grabbing the judge's attention. Even if the idea seems ridiculous, don't dismiss it out of hand. I find the more connections I make, the more an idea starts to materialise and grow. Sometimes several of the ideas can be used together.

It's too late for Christmas stories now, but it's a good theme to use as an example:

These are just off the top of my head and would normally be more extensive. Coloured pens are optional! Different things work for different people, but it might be worth giving it a go if you're stuck.

Hope you're all inspired by the festive season. Best of luck with the competitions you enter now and in the new year.

Buon Natale / Nadolig Llawen / Happy Christmas!

November Competition Monthly!

There are a number of speculative fiction competitions this month, featuring fantasy, science fiction and the supernatural. Maybe it's because of the long nights we're now facing, but at least it might get you in the mood for writing one of these stories.

It was a couple of years ago now I mentioned record keeping on the competition monthly, so it's
worth bringing the subject up again. I'm certain I'd have got into a right mess with my submissions without my spreadsheets. I used to add the competition entries to the sheet for my magazine subs, but eventually created a new spreadsheet especially for the comps, which I found much more useful.
These are in date order. I also keep a paper system. This is an exercise book set out by story. This does include the magazine submissions and allows me to see exactly where each story has been sent.

Novel competition entries likewise go on the competition sheet, but I also add them to the spreadsheet for each novel. It sounds complicated but really makes everything much simpler. Since at times I've had up to sixty 'out theres' of various kinds, whether competitions, magazine subs or novel subs, it's important to keep control of it all. I'd hate to send a story or novel out to the same place twice, and incur the annoyance of the competition or publisher concerned.

Best of luck with the competitions you enter, and don't forget to let us know of any competition success you have.

October Competition Monthly!

There are lots more competitions to get your teeth into this month. Three of them are free to enter, two of which have an interesting twist.

The Bubo competition wants entries it can add illustrations and music to. Bubo are developing an app that is soon to launch on Apple Store and may be at least one future of literature. When we think of stories with illustrations, it's normally children's tales that come to mind, but Bubo are also asking for adult literature, which brings a whole new challenge. The recent adult animation Loving Vincent, based on Van Gogh's paintings, came to mind as a similar idea. You can find out a bit more about the here.
new app

The New Media Prize is likewise looking at the future of e-literature, this time using images and video clips, among other things. This competition is more likely suitable for those who are particularly computer savvy and worth a go if you are.

For the rest of us, there are plenty of traditional short story comps among this month's selection, with a good variety of lengths. If you're a children's or YA author, the Chicken House competition is offering an excellent prize of a contract, money and an agent. Expensive at £15 entry, but then there's a lot to win.

Happy comping everyone, and don't forget to let us know of any competition success you have.

Competition Monthly – September 2017

Welcome back to another bumper crop of competitions!

October seems to be a good month for writing contests, particularly flash fiction ones, which represent half of the list below. Some good advice on writing flash fictions can be found here.

The love story themed competition run by Writing Magazine should be right up RNA members' street, but you'll have to be quick as it finishes in a few days. You've got a bit longer for the magazine's adult fairy story. Many examples of past winners of this competition can be found on pages 2, 4, 7, 9, 11 and 15 of the 'Showcase', the link to which is on the left hand side of the
competition page on their website.

I've mentioned a couple of times before about being wary of competitions that state in the rules that entering will be seen as you giving permission for them to publish your story, whether you win a prize or not. The Bath Flash Fiction Award is offering publication to fifty longlisted entries. But the fact they're offering, so you have a choice, is the reason I've included it. You might decide you don't want it published without getting some kind of recompense for you work. On the other hand, the Bath award is quite prestigious, so inclusion in the anthology might be something advantageous to add to your CV.

Happy comping everyone, and don't forget to let us know of any competition success you have.

July Competition Monthly!

Welcome to another great competition round-up from Francesca!

There's a bumper crop of competitions this month as the blogs having a holiday over August.

Five competitions were disregarded due to the stipulation that simply entering gave the company permission to publish the piece, with no guarantee of payment.

Unless there is some other, good advantage to entering, this is definitely not on. As far as I can tell,
the ones I've included don't have this clause, but it's always worth sifting through the rules to make sure.

You'll notice the entry fees vary enormously from £3 to £25. This usually reflects the prize money available. The prize money, in turn, might indicate how many people will enter the competition. Sometimes it's better to enter those with less prize money knowing there may be fewer entrants.

This month an article competition has been included. This should be right up all our streets, as it asks us to relate our 'writing day'. For some of us that might be 'night'. For many writers, one day is never the same as the next, but at least that should make the entries varied.

I'm sure there are those of you who like to dabble in poetry from time to time (I know I do!), so those comps that also have a poetry section have been highlighted.

See you again in September for the next round of comps. Have a good summer.

Happy comping everyone, and don't forget to let us know of any competition success you have.
